U.S. designates Ukraine for temporary protected status

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has designated Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status for 18 months based on “ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions in Ukraine that prevent Ukrainian nationals, and those of no nationality who last habitually resided in Ukraine, from returning to Ukraine safely,” according to a statement issued by the agency.

The designation results from the humanitarian crisis caused by Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian nationals who have continuously lived in the United States from March 1, 2022 will be eligible for temporary protected status for an initial period of 18 months. TPS will not be granted to individuals from Ukraine arriving after March 1, 2022.

Additional details will become available once the program is announced in the Federal Register.
